Large group of children on a lit stage performing a dance

Dance Moves is an educational enrichment project for children, delivered within Early Years centres and Primary schools. The project prioritises schools that are located in areas of London considered to be of high deprivation, with limited or no dance provision, and schools that wish to increase or diversify their offer of physical activities.

The project aims to:

  • Provide creative dance sessions for children who may, through geographic, economic or other reasons, previously been unable to attend a regular dance activity.
  • Provide good quality, fun and innovative dance enrichment.
  • Encourage participation in a creative arts activity.
  • Motivate participants and build self-esteem and confidence.
  • Promote a healthier lifestyle and raise activity levels.
  • Assist children in the development of communication, team building, key skills and physical literacy.
  • Provide a performance opportunity for pupils to showcase dance pieces created by them.

In addition to the weekly sessions, the project provides opportunities for the children to perform and share their work in our annual Dance Moves Festival at the end of the year. This gives a focus to work towards thus enabling the children to realise their self-worth and fulfil their potential, which ultimately will raise their aspirations for the future.

The end of year Dance Moves festival was started in 2010 as an extension to the Dance Moves Project. It provides a unique opportunity for children to showcase the dance works they have created, come together with other participating schools and enjoy each other’s performances. Parents are also invited to the festival to watch their children’s amazing achievements.

Since 2018, we have developed the Dance Moves Festival to include participants of our Dance Discover project, so that students of all ages and abilities have access to the same performance and appreciation opportunities.
